#7 Moving to Mitla

Yellow

Today is Friday the 28th of September (not August). Last Saturday I read. Sunday I read some more and watched a movie in Spanish with the family.

On Monday Nate picked me and all of my stuff up at 9 and we went to the office. At the office we painted 2 rooms, blaaaaaaaah. I then went to Sam’s Club with the Kuglers to get food. We then went to Mitla where I am going to be living for the next 7 months. After I got moved in, I went to the Browns’ house for dinner (Tom Brown is my primary boss). I then went home and slept badly.

On Tuesday I started work at the center and the only thing of note that happened was that on our way to fix a water heater the car broke down. I ate lunch at the Butlers’ house Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday supplying my own lunch. For dinner I made myself mac and cheese and a milkshake, and boy were they good!

On Wednesday I sorted nuts and bolts for 6 hours. Then for dinner had hamburgers with cream cheese. I then went and bought a fan. Then I baked chocolate chip cookies, which where made with Mexican chocolate, which means they had cinnamon in them.

On Thursday I got up early enough to make myself bacon and eggs. At the center I helped Peter (don’t remember his last name) with wiring the water system. I had Honey Bunches of Oats for dinner. Today I raked and made flat (not level) the area in front of 1B – an apartment that is currently under construction. I then helped Peter finish the wiring. When I was done with that I went with Brian Buuck (I think that is right) to work on his new house. His young daughter and two Mexicans went with us. When we got there I ended up babysitting the kid (which was fine by me) while the other three discussed what needed to happen (in Spanish, of course). When I am done writing this I plan to go eat at Taco Brown.

Here are some answers to prayers spoken and unspoken. The move to Mitla went great; I have not gotten sick all week; and Tom Brown is lending me his bike for the time that I am in Mitla.

P.S. I was going to title this email “Me in Mexico, Part 8 but decided that would be mean.

#6 Fellowship, Work and Physical Battles

Buenos días de Mexico (Good Morning from Mexico)

Today is Friday the 21st of August [ed.: september]. After writing the newsletter on last Thursday, I fixed the spotlight I had been working on earlier in the week.

On Friday, installed three lights on the second floor in the window canopies. Friday night I went to the Agee’s house for dinner with the Kuglers. There I met Matthew Agee and Andrew (I forget his last name). I also met some of their friends. this made me really happy because these were the first people my age I had met. I ended up staying and talking to Mat until about 10 (we got there at 6).

On Saturday I rested until about 6 o’clock when I went to the church for the Independence Day celebration. While there some youth of the female
variety invited me to spend the night in the church with the rest of the youth group. I decided to stay and had great fun watching movies, playing games, and attacking people with mattresses. We ended up going to bed about 4 in the morning.

On Sunday after church I went to Mitla with the Kuglers for the SIL’s Independence Day celebration.

On Monday after class at the office, I took pictures of electrical boxes for Nate so he could send them to the electrician who wired the building to find out where cords went. Monday night, Monty came back, and stayed until about 4 in the morning. Because of this I stayed home on Tuesday and rested.

On Wednesday I put together Rosy’s new desk at the office (Rosy is the boss of the office).

On Thursday I carried lumber and set up rooms for painting. Today I continued setting up for painting, including installing conduit on the wall of one of the rooms.

I am moving to Mitla on Monday, please pray that this will go smoothly. Also please pray that Monty will stay away from me, as well as any other sickness.

#5 Water, Work and Wellness

Filed under: Uncategorized — jfick @ 4:29 pm

Good morning y’all this is Judah P. Fickett speaking on this beautiful Thursday.

On Saturday I mainly just rested and read. In the evening we got the first wave of rain from Gabrielle (the storm).

On Sunday I went to church then came home and rested. At about 6 it started to rain again and I started to read again. At about 8 water started to seep out from under my bathroom door. By 8:30 all of the ground level shower drains were spewing water. Thus we started to sweep (yes sweep) the water into inside courtyard.

While we were doing this, Señor Jose opened the drain into the outside courtyard. After that the water started going back down the drains. For the next thirty minutes we worked on cleaning up the resulted mess. Then the courtyard got too full of water, so the water started coming in again. So then we had to rig a pump from the courtyard to the street. When all was said and done it was 11. I then took a shower, ate some frosted flakes, then went to bed.

On Monday I was really tired. After lessons I went to the office and finished installing the spotlight I started on Friday. Throughout the entire day I was feeling really tired and slightly sick so I did not have a great day. But my day was made when I got a letter right as I was leaving the office (by the way it was 10 days from the postmarked day for aproximate arrival time).

On Tuesday I installed a flagpole, it was fun and scary. On Wednesday I installed another light and fixed the flagpole. Today I went to lessons (which I did all week) then came to the office and started this journaling.

I should be moving to Mitla within two weeks. Please pray that that goes smoothly. Also pray that I will start getting better sleep, I have not had a good night’s rest for about two weeks.

#4 Spanish, Electricity, Etc.

Filed under: Uncategorized — jfick @ 1:50 pm

Good morning to all on this loverly Friday the 7th.

After writing last Friday I went home and continued to fight Monty. This fight continued all day Saturday.

Also on Saturday I finished Pilgrim’s Progress and started Thomas Wingfold, Curate. On Sunday I went to church and then to Milta stopping for food at Taco Brown.

On Monday I started lessons at Amigos Del Sol. For my lessons I have two teachers, they are Hector and Miriam. Miriam is a Christian and Hector is intersted in learning more about Christ. After class (9-noon), I went to the office and started to hang light fictures on the outside of the building. And then it started to rain (which it does alot) so I cut and put tubing on the bottom of a spiral stair to protect peoples heads from ouchies.

On Tuesday I did the same thing as the day before but this time was not interrupted by the rain. On Wednesday after going to Spanish lessons I went to the office and finished the lights (including attaching the photocell to the curcuit. I finished Thomas Wingfold, Curate and started Paul Faber, Surgeon (both of which are by George MacDonald).

On Thurday my Spanish class took place in the park. At the office I covered all of the open electrical boxes and went to a store and bought screws (by myself I might add). Today at the office (after class, of course) Nate and I went to buy something at the electronic store. We then decided to go to the lumber yard and check prices on plywood. It took us two buses and half a mile walk to find it. We then went back to the office and I started to install a spotlight in the courtyard. It was then the thought struck me, “I am sure lighting this place up while I am here.”

As for some questions that have been asked. I am in the city of Oaxaca in the state of Oaxaca (that is one of the hardest words in the world to type). As for packages I have a separate address for them but there are a couple of important things that need to be done to packages so I will not be posting the address here (if you would like to send one contact either me or my mother about what you need to do).

Judah P. Fickett

P.S. By the way my meal schedule is breakfast at 7, lunch at 4, and dinner at 9.
